Eagles Shut Out in Season Finale on U-102.1

The Southern Door offense could not find a way to bring runners home Saturday morning on U102.1, falling to St. Mary's Catholic 11-0 in Brussels.  The Zephyrs jumped out to an early lead when Joe Pirillo hit a 2-RBI single in the top of the 1st inning.  He would have RBI singles in his four at-bats on the day, totaling 6 RBIs.  The first two men would reach base in the bottom of the inning when Braylon Berg walked to lead off, and Tyler Neinas reached on an Error.  Will Jandrin would then ground out to move them over, but that is as far as they would reach all game after back-to-back strikeouts by Isaac Baudhuin and Jarek Valley ended the threat.

The only other threat to score the Eagles mustered was in the 6th inning when Neinas was hit by a pitch, and Will Jandrin and Jarek Valley loaded the bases with a single out, ending the day of Zyphers starting pitcher Collin Nigl.  The Eagles would fail to score after Nick Beck hit an inning-ending double play, grounding to third and the 6-3 putout.

The Eagles will await bracket releases to find out who their next opponent will be when the WIAA playoffs begin next week.

Eagles baseball hosts St. Mary Catholic on U-102.1

The Southern Door Eagles baseball team caps off the week with a non-conference matchup on Saturday morning against St. Mary Catholic.

The Eagles have been streaky lately, winning six straight matchups after four consecutive victories were soured by a three-game skid.  Last Saturday, the Eagles took both games of a doubleheader against NEW Lutheran, winning 12-0 in Game 1 and 17-0 in Game 2.  Both games ended after five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.

In a Packerland Conference doubleheader played at West Jacksonport Friday afternoon, Southern Door took two games from Sevastopol. Game 1 saw Isaac Baudhuin dominate the game from the mound in a 2-hit complete game shutout for the Eagles. Baudhuin's gem saw him hit 1 batter, walk 1 batter, and strike out 13 Pioneer hitters. SD scored 1 in the 1st inning, and added a 2nd run in the 3rd inning. The Eagles took control with 5 runs on 4 hits in the 6th inning, which resulted in a 7-0 final score in game 1. Braylon Berg, Tyler Neinas, and Jerek Valley all contributed 2 hits to the winning effort, with Valley leading the way with 2 RBI.

Pitching again proved the difference in game 2, as Tyler Neinas and Nick Beck combined on a 3-hitter, with SD taking a 11-1 victory in a game stopped by the 10-run rule after 5 innings. The Eagles struck early with 4 runs in both the the 1st and 2nd innings to lead 8-0. The game settled in until 4 Sevastopol errors in the bottom of the 5th inning led to 2 runs and the final 10-run margin. Jerek Valley led the hitting with a 3-4 game, and Braylon Berg and Nick Beck added 2 hits apiece. Southern Door finishes Packerland Conference play with a 10-6 record.

The Zephyrs are 12-7 on the season, including 10-1 in the last 11 games. They responded to a 5-4 loss to Luxemburg-Casco on Wednesday with a 7-0 win on Thursday.

The first pitch, with Jacob Nate and Eric Fischer on the call, is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Saturday. The pregame show on U-102.1 and NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com will begin at 9:45 a.m.

Southern Door girls capture Packerland Conference track crown

Five event wins helped the Southern Door girls track team capture the top spot in the Packerland Conference track championships held at Algoma on Monday.

Frankie Nellis (200m, long jump, triple jump), Danica Neville (pole vault), and Elise Jackson (300m hurdles) did the heavy lifting for the Eagles while the team piled up eight other top three performances. On the boys side, Zach Lynch continued his domination of the sprints with wins in the 100m and 200m. Damontrae Meeks (110m hurdles), Ben Grota (3200m), and the 4x100m relay also took the top spot for the Eagles.

Southern Door Baseball Scorches NEW Lutheran on U102.1

The Southern Door Eagles took both games of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon against NEW Lutheran, winning 12-0 in Game 1 and 17-0 in Game 2.  Both games ended after five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.

In Game 1, Southern Door served as the home team.  Pitcher Will Jandrin gave up a lead-off double, which would be the game's only hit for NEW Lutheran.  Jandrin struck out the next three batters on his way to 9 total strikeouts for the game. Tyler Neinas started the scoring with an RBI single in the 3rd as the Eagles would score 4 in the inning.  Southern Door would bring 13 batters to the plate in the 4th and plate eight runs to seal the game.  Jandrin pitched all five innings to earn the win.

Southern Door started Game 2 as the road team, Braylon Berg was hit by the first pitch of the game, stole 2nd and 3rd base before scoring on a wild pitch by Jack Starich to give Southern Door an early 1-0 lead in the 1st inning.  The Eagles would add three runs in the 2nd and five runs in each of the 3rd and 4th innings on their way to the 17-0 win.  Tyler Neinas started the game on the mound and pitched the first two frames before moving to 1st base due to injury after an RBI double.  NEW would threaten to score in the third after Jack Jeanquart entered the game to pitch, loading the bases with only one out.  Jeanquart would strike out the next two Blazers batters to retire the side and escape the inning.

Eagles softball sweeps Pioneers

Southern Door captured Door County softball supremacy on Friday with 7-2 and 6-5 wins on Friday over Sevastopol.

The Eagles put the pressure on early with two runs in the first inning only to have the Pioneers answer with one more in the bottom half of the frame. It was 3-1 heading into the seventh when the Eagles four times to put the game out of reach, thanks in part to a double by Ashlyn Delfosse that scored three runs by the time the dust settled. Delfosse went 2-4 with four RBI while Madyson Counard, Hailey Veeser, and Lexi Tassoul also drove in a run. For the Pioneers, Jolene Luedtke and Brynn Schartner each had two hits while Addison Schauske and Luedtke accounted for the RBI. Alannah Kaye earned the win for the Eagles from the circle, allowing two runs (1 ER) on nine hits while striking out eight.

In game two, the Eagles came back 5-1 deficit in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game before Bella Price scored the game winning run on passed ball in the bottom of the ninth. Ashlyn Delfosse drove in three runs with a home run while Price and Hailey Veeser also collected RBI. Price and Madyson Counard accounted for five of the 10 Eagles hits. For the Pioneers, Jolene Luedtke had another strong game with three hits and two RBI while Naomi Rikkola, Brynn Schartner, and Kayla Ranly knocked in runs. Schartner and Libby Ash had two hits for the Pioneers.

Eagles softball splits with Storm

The Southern Door softball team played Kewaunee in a split doubleheader on Tuesday, losing the first game 5-3 before winning two 3-2.

In game one, the Eagles allowed four runs in the final three innings after having the game tied at one after four. The Eagles rallied with two runs in the bottom of the seventh but came up short in the end. Sophia Counard drove in two runs on her home run, while Maydson Counard drove in the Eagles' other run on a ground out. The Storm took advantage of three Eagles errors to score their runs. Breanna Riha accounted for two of the Storm's five hits, while Sami Walechka and Vivian Bootz collected the RBI.

In game two, the Eagles scored the eventual game-winning run in the top of the seventh inning when Alannah Kaye clubbed a double to score Madyson Counard. Bella Price had two hits and an RBI in the game, with Counard also driving in a run. Jenna Rohr tried her hardest to help her cause on the mound, going 2-2 with a double. Lexi Hanrahan also had two hits, while Mariah Schlies drove in the lone earned run for the Storm.

Eagles drop a pair to Storm

Southern Door fell twice to Kewaunee on Tuesday. The Eagles trailed 4-0
after 2 innings, starting pitcher Drew Daoust could not find the
strike zone, issuing five walks and hitting a batter in two innings of work.

Isaac Baudhuin relieved Daoust in the 3rd inning. Although Baudhuin walked 4, hit 2 batters, and was reached for four hits, he managed to pitch 5 shutout innings, and when Baudhuin got a 2-out single in the bottom of the 7th inning to
score Braylon Berg,

The Eagles had come all the way back to tie the score 4-4. However, Kewaunee
quickly jumped on Will Jandrin for two runs on three hits in the top of the
8th, and held SD in the bottom of the inning to escape with a 6-4 victory.

Game 2 saw the Storm score 2 runs in the 1st inning. The lead was
increased steadily as Kewaunee added 1 run in the 4th, two runs in the
5th, and one more run in the 6th. Although SD loaded the bases in the 7th
inning, there would be no big comeback, and Kewaunee completed the sweep with a 6-0 shutout win.

Southern Door returns to Packerland Conference play on Friday at Oconto,
with game 1 of the doubleheader scheduled to start at 3:45pm.
