Kewaunee tops Brillion on the road

The Kewaunee Storm baseball team did not look past the Brillion Lions before their matchup against Green Bay Preble at Fox Cities Stadium, beating the Lions 7-2.

The Storm plated three runs in the third inning and took the drama out of the proceedings in the sixth inning with four runs thanks to run-scoring singles by Collin Spranger and Owen Vaughn. Of the seven runs, only one of them was charged against the Lions' pitching staff as they were failed by a defense that committed five innings. Micah Vannes and Connor Kilgore each had two hits in the win for the Storm.

The Storm will play the Hornets following Saturday's Timber Rattlers game, which is approximately 4:30 p.m.

Late Vikings rally silences Storm on softball diamond

A four-run seventh inning by the Valders Vikings snatched a win away from the Kewaunee softball team on Thursday as they fell 6-3.

The two teams traded runs in the first inning and the Vikings took a slim lead in the fourth with a run scored in the frame. The Storm took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning Baleigh Saxby drove in her second and third runs of the day with a single. The Vikings' comeback came with two outs with an error sparking the rally. A single and two doubles later, the Storm saw themselves facing a deficit they would not overcome.

Breanna RIha, Summer Walechka, Vivian Bootz, Saxby, Jenna Rohr, and Braelyn Chevalier all had one hit in the game for the Storm

Megan Hockhammer provided the damage for the Vikings, collecting two hits include a solo homer in the first inning while going the distance from the circle, allowing three runs (2 ER) on six hits while striking out eight. Rohr took the loss for the Storm, allowing six runs (1 ER) on eight hits while striking out 16.

Southern Door golfers Tyler Plzak and Finley Lavine tied for third place as they both shot a 40, one stroke better than fifth-place finish Finn Salm of Gibraltar. The Storm's Henry Annen shot a 44 to come in sixth place, tied with Oconto's Eli Bahrke and one shot better than eight-place finishers Jack Misovec of NEW Lutheran and James Zittlow of Southern Door.

Storm softball nips Tigers

The Kewaunee Storm softball team scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning on Tuesday to defeat the Wrightstown Tigers 6-4.

The two teams traded two-run rallies, with the Storm scoring twice in the first and third innings and the Tigers doing the same in the third and fourth frames. A go-ahead homer by Baleigh Saxby and a sacrifice bunt by Maddy Reckelberg proved to be the difference in the end. Saxby's dinger capped off a 2-for-3 day with three RBI. Braelyn Chevalier also had two hits while Jenna Rohr and Breanna Riha each knocked in a run in the Storm's victory. Rohr went the distance on the mound, striking out 13 while allowing four runs (3 ER). Briley Durocher led the Tigers offensively with a pair of hits and RBI in her statline.

Storm narrowly splits Oconto doubleheader

Just two runs separated the Kewaunee Storm from an undefeated start or a winless stretch as they lost to Oconto Blue Devils 5-4 before beating them 3-2 in the second matchup.

In the first game, the Storm jumped out to a 3-0 lead thanks to an error in the first inning and a sacrifice fly, and an error in the third inning. After the Blue Devils scored at the bottom of the third, the two traded runs in the fourth before the hosts took the lead, with a three-run rally in the fifth thanks to RBI base hits by Devon Bostwick and Levi Beirl. Collin Spranger scored 2-4 and two runs, while Owen Vaughn registered the lone RBI for the Storm while going 1-3 in the morning.

In the second game, the Storm did all of their damage in the third inning when Brett Paulsen singled home two runs, and Brady Pribek drove in the third tally on a double. Pribek was also responsible for holding down the Blue Devils, going 5 2/3 innings while allowing two runs (2 ER) on five hits. Ayden Smidle recorded the final out for the Storm. Garett Goebel and Kyle Bowman drove in the lone runs for the Blue Devils.

Storm baseball hits diamond for doubleheader

The Kewaunee Storm baseball team will not ease into the season, starting it right away on Monday with a doubleheader against Packerland Conference foe Oconto on the road.

The twin bill was originally scheduled for April 13th.

The Storm finished last season 22-5 overall and a perfect 16-0 anchored by Packerland Conference Player of the Year Cal Ihlenfeldt during his senior campaign. Their season ended abruptly in the WIAA Regional as they lost to New Holstein 7-5. Owen Carlson, Thomas Stangel, Ethan Paplham, Braxton Riha, and Collin Spranger were All-Packerland Conference performers last season and could return this year.

The Blue Devils had five All-Packerland Conference players last year, with Cooper Campsure and Ethan Wusterbarth the top returners. They went 18-6 last year and 12-4 in the Packerland Conference. Their season ended last year with a 6-5 extra-inning loss to Shiocton in the first day of the WIAA Regional.

First pitch of the Easter Monday doubleheader in Oconto is scheduled for 10 a.m.

Sophia Pingel went 3-3 for the Tigers with a run scored.

The Kewaunee softball team opens its 2024 campaign on the road when they play Chilton at 4:30 p.m.

The Storm finished last year with a loss in regionals to Southern Door and a 10-13 record. The team welcomes back underclassmen Breanna Riha, Lexi Hanrahan, Bailey Saxby, and upperclassmen Jenna Rohr, all of whom made All-Packerland Conference squads a year ago.

The Tigers finished last season 19-4 but had their hearts broken in the regional final against Mishicot to end their season early. They tied New Holstein for the Eastern Conference title.

Kewaunee alum impresses at NFL Combine

One of the most impressive showings by an offensive lineman in the history of the NFL Combine belongs to Kewaunee alum and former Wisconsin Badger Tanor Bortolini.

According to X's Kent Lee Platte (@MathBomb, Picture Below), Tanor Bortolini scored a Relative Athletic Score of 9.97 out of 10, which is ranked sixth out of the more than 1400 offensive guards to participate in the NFL Combine from 1987 to 2024.  He registered one of the few 40-yard dash times under five seconds and posted elite level scores in the shuttle, three cone, vertical jump, and broad jump drills.

The NFL Draft is scheduled for April 25th-27th in Detroit.

Kewaunee eliminated in heartbreaking fashion on 104.1 WRLU

The Kewaunee Storm boys' basketball season has ended after a heartbreaking loss to the Oconto Blue Devils on Friday evening, falling 65-64 on 104.1 WRLU.

Kewaunee won the opening tip and scored in the first three seconds on a pair of Thomas Stangel free throws. From there, though, Oconto went on a 12-0 run until a Braxton Riha layup at 13:54 in the first half. The Storm would answer back with a run of its own, going on a 9-0 run to bring Kewaunee back within 2 points.  After the opening half of play, Oconto went into the locker room with a 37-30.

The second half was as action-packed as the first, as Oconto and Kewaunee traded runs back and forth.  Oconto’s Carter Koch and Kewaunee’s Braxton Riha were forced to sit most of the second half due to foul trouble, each having four early in the second half.  Riha returned to the game with 10 minutes remaining and gave the Storm a boost, cutting the game to a 2-point Blue Devils lead.  Koch re-entered with just under 7 minutes left and led Oconto to emerge with a 10-point lead, 62-52, with 5:08 left in regulation.  Koch would foul out in under 4 minutes, opening the door for one last Kewaunee comeback attempt.  Oconto missed several bonus free throw attempts as Kewaunee was able to capitalize, pulling within 2 points at 65-63 in the final seconds.  Another Blue Devils miss allowed the Storm one final chance.  Braxton Riha was fouled with 0.6 seconds left in regulation and went to the free throw line with an opportunity to tie the game.  Riha made the first but missed the second, and the final horn would sound as Kewaunee scrambled to the ball for a final attempt.

Kewaunee was led by Thomas Stangel’s 24 points and Connor Kilgore’s 15-point efforts in the defeat.  Carter Koch led the way for the victorious Blue Devils with 19 points.  Oconto moves on to the WIAA Division 4 Regional Finals, hosting Weyauwega-Fremont on Saturday night.

Kewaunee’s season comes to an end with a 17-8 record.  Thomas Stangel, Braxton Riha, Christopher Cullen, and Collin Spranger are graduating this spring.

Storm starts up with Oconto in regional semi-final on 104.1 WRLU

The #3 Kewaunee Storm will play a familiar opponent Friday night as they play host to the #6 Oconto Blue Devils in a Division 4 state tournament regional semi-final.

The Storm beat the Blue Devils twice during the regular season in the Packerland Conference, coming away with two close wins of 67-64 at home and a 60-56 decision in Oconto.

Kewaunee Coach Matt Bosdeck says beating Oconto for the third time this season will be challenging.

Kewaunee (17-7) finished second in the conference and beat Algoma at home in their last game 68-46.  Thomas Stangel leads the way with a 23.8 average in scoring, with Braxton Riha hauling down 6.9 boards a game.

Oconto (16-9) finished tied for third in the conference and is coming off a big 87-64 home win over the #11 Coleman Cougars on Tuesday in a regional quarterfinal.

The Blue Devils are led by Carter Koch, averaging 23.3 points and 7.6 rebounds per game.

The game will be broadcast on 104.1 WRLU and streamed on New Radio Sports Network with Eric Fisher and Paul Schmitt on the call.  Pregame is scheduled for 6:45 p.m. with tipoff at 7:00 p.m.

Storm nipped by Vikings in overtime on 104.1 WRLU

A put-back basket with 3.8 seconds left in overtime lifted the #4 Valders Vikings to a 41-40 regional championship upset win over the #1 Kewaunee Storm on Saturday night.

Claire Zipperer rebounded a missed shot and banked home the game-winner as Valders  (21-5) will now advance to the sectional semi-finals in Sheboygan next Thursday.

The Storm started out strong taking a 14-4 lead in the first eight minutes, only to see the Vikings go on a 10-0 run to tie up the game at 14-14.  A three-pointer by Jade Kroll with 18 seconds left gave the Storm an 18-14 going into halftime.

The second half was a see-saw affair, with Valders going on an 11-2 run to open the half to take a 25-20 before Braelyn Chevalier came up with five points and a couple of steals to tie the game at 25-25.

The regulation came down to Valders missing a shot at the buzzer to send the game into overtime at 37-37.

In overtime, the Storm would take a 40-37 lead before Valders cut the lead down to one with under two minutes to go. After two time-outs, the Vikings would get the deciding basket after a missed floater by Megan Hochkammer in the lane that Zipperer put back in for the game-clincher.  A desperation 30-footer by Gabby Stangel was long, and Valders came away with the hard-fought victory over the Storm.

Jade Kroll led the Storm with 18 points, while Zoey Siders hit four three-pointers for 12 points to lead Valders in scoring.

Kewaunee finishes the season at 23-2 and will reload as they return all their players for next season except for senior Rylee Dax.
