A team state track championship may be out of reach but Algoma still has high hopes for its three state qualifiers. Thursday was a travel day for local athletes as they compete in 20 different events this weekend at the WIAA State Track Meet in LaCrosse. Most of the athletes will begin their day at 9:30 a.m. when preliminary heats of the sprints and field events kick off. You can find heat sheets below for the events featuring local athletes.

The Algoma Wolves softball team was just one bad inning away from potentially seeing a magical season continue, but instead saw it end after a 5-2 loss to Mishicot Tuesday.

The Wolves struck first with two runs in the opening frame thanks to Emersyn Wallace's RBI double and Makayla Guillette's RBI triple. 

Mishicot would answer one inning later with five run second inning spurred by a double by Taylor Weger, an error, and a single by Katie Koeppelin.

Maddie Prokash saw her Packerland Conference Player of the Year season close with a loss, surrendering five runs on six hits over six innings, striking out six.

The Algoma softball team had eight players make Packerland All-Conference teams for the 2019 season led by conference player of the year Maddy Prokash. She made the first team as a pitcher. Prokash was joined on the first team by catcher Makayla Giulette and outfielder Miss Srnka. Chlole Spitzer and Emersyn Wallace were named second teamers as infielders and Hanna Weise as an outfielder. Brooklyn Hoffmann (IF) and Breanne Schmidt (OF) were named Honorable Mention players.

Zach Schmidt was the only Wolf on the baseball team to be named to an all-conference team. He made second team as a pitcher.

Algoma's Maddie Prokash had a dominant year in the circle for the Wolves. She has earned the Packerland Conference Player of the Year for softball. Prokash threw seven shutouts and helped lead the Wolves to be co-conference champions. Algoma won the regional championship on Thursday shutting out Roncalli 3-0 and will take on Mishicot on the road in the sectionals on Tuesday at 5 PM. 

Algoma showed its strength is in the throwing events at the Princeton Sectional Thursday.

State qualifiers include Bobbi Blahnik in the shot put and discus, Jenny Farley in the pole vault, and Max Schoening in the shot put.

Maddie Prokash threw a gem on Tuesday for Algoma Wolves Varsity, allowing zero runs and besting Hilbert/Stockbridge by a score of 5-0.

Algoma Wolves Varsity opened up scoring in the first inning, when Chloie Spitzer grounded out, scoring one run.

A single by R Cole in the first inning was a positive for Hilbert/Stockbridge.

Prokash was credited with the victory for Algoma Wolves Varsity. She lasted seven innings, allowing three hits and zero runs while striking out 14 and walking one.

G Vandehey took the loss for Hilbert/Stockbridge. She surrendered five runs on seven hits over three innings, striking out one and walking one.

Brooklyn Hoffman went 2-for-2 at the plate to lead Algoma Wolves Varsity in hits.

Hilbert/Stockbridge didn't commit a single error in the field. B Ecker had seven chances in the field, the most on the team.

Algoma's baseball bats were working well in its double header split against North Fond du Lac.

Algoma split its doubleheader against North Fond du Lac, losing the first game 7-6 but rebounding to take game two by a 6-1 tally. 

In the first game, the Wolves answered 2-0 early lead three runs scored over the next three inings. After both teams scored three runs in the fourth inning, North Fond du Lac scored two more to put the game out of reach.

The second game saw the bats come alive again for the Wolves, including a four-run outburst in the third inning.

The Algoma Wolves were able to use their home track to its advantage as they were able to qualify 13 for the sectional meet on Thursday.

On the 4th place boys team, Dane Johnson, Brett Benesh, Max Schoening, the 4 x 200 meter relay, and Jordan Deringer all qualified, with Johnson and Benesh doing so in multiple events.

Finishing in 6th place overall, the Wolves girls will see Bobby Blahnik, Jenny Farley, Liberty Ansorge, and Coleen Dachlet move on to Thursday's meet.

Zach Schmidt threw a dominant game for Algoma on Friday to lead the Wolves to an 8-0 win at Green Bay NEW Lutheran. Schmidt struck out 10 Blazers and pitched the complete game. Tristan Copet had two hits to lead the Wolves on offense.

Algoma will play their final regular season games on Monday when they host North Fond du Lac in a doubleheader. Game one begins at 5 PM.

Maddie Prokash didn't allow a single run against Oconto, throwing a complete game shutout and leading Algoma to a 4-0 victory on Tuesday.

The Wolves opened up scoring in the first inning.  Emersyn Wallace doubled on a 0-1 count, scoring one run.

Algoma tallied three runs in the fourth inning.  Wallace, Makayla Guillette, and Prokash all contributed in the big inning with RBIs.

Prokash was the winning pitcher for Algoma. She lasted seven innings, allowing two hits and zero runs while striking out 11.

Kalista Susa was in the pitcher's circle for Oconto. She surrendered four runs on five hits over four innings, striking out one and walking zero.  NevaehBrill threw two innings out of the bullpen.

Wallace led the Wolves with two hits in three at bats.

Algoma claimed four individual titles en route to a pair of fourth-place finishes at the Packerland Conference Track Championships Monday afternoon in Kewaunee.

Max Schoening threw 136'11" in the discus to claim the only title on the boys' side. For the girls, Liberty Ansorge paced the field in the 300M hurdles in a time of just over 51 seconds while Bobbi Blahnik (shot put) and Jenny Farley (pole vault) cleaned up things for the Wolves in the field events.

Algoma baseball couldn't quite get over the hump on their home field against Kewaunee. The Wolves lost the "War on the Shore" game 4-3.

Algoma heads to Oconto on Tuesday for a 5 PM first pitch.

Algoma took their game in dramatic walk-off fashion, thanks to a walk-off single at the end of the game to topple Kewaunee.  The game was tied at one with Algoma Wolves Varsity batting in the bottom of the seventh when Maddie Prokash singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run.

The pitching was strong on both sides. Prokash struck out 11, while Hailey Gaedtke sat down three.

Algoma got things moving in the first inning, when Hanna Wiese hit a solo homer

Kewaunee evened things up at one in the top of the fifth inning when Mykenzi Uhlers hit a solo homer.

Prokash was the winning pitcher for the Wolves. She surrendered one run on four hits over seven innings, striking out 11 and walking one.

Gaedtke was on the rubber for Kewaunee. She allowed six hits and two runs over six and a third innings, striking out three and walking one.

Algoma smacked one home run on the day. Wiese went for the long ball in the first inning.

Missy Srnka went 2-for-2 at the plate to lead the Wolves in hits.

Sturgeon Bay's hitters had trouble getting the bat on the ball on Friday against Maddie Prokash. She struck out 14 batters leading Algoma to a 3-1 victory on the road. Prokash only allowed five hits in the complete game win.

The game was tied at 1 going to the sixth inning when Algoma was able to pull ahead with two runs. Missy Srnka had two hits and scored twice in the game.

Algoma will host the "War on the Shore" against Kewaunee on Saturday at noon.

Algoma traveled to Sturgeon Bay for a doubleheader on Friday and the road was not kind to the Wolves. One game Algoma was able to keep close and the other was a blowout. Sturgeon Bay won game one 15-1. Algoma was able to pitch and defend much better in game two but just couldn't get any offense going. The final score was 2-0.

The Wolves will host the "War on the Shore" on Saturday against Kewaunee. First pitch is at noon.

Algoma Wolves fell behind early and couldn't come back in a 12-0 loss to Peshtigo on Monday. Peshtigo scored on a single by Brody Heroux and a double by Mitch Peters in the first inning.

The Algoma Wolves Varsity struggled to contain the high-powered offense of Peshtigo, giving up 12 runs.

Peshtigo got on the board in the first inning. Heroux singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring two runs.

A single by Zach Schmidt in the first inning was a positive for Algoma Wolves Varsity.

Heroux was on the hill for Peshtigo. He surrendered zero runs on four hits over five innings, striking out 11.

Schmidt led things off on the mound for Algoma Wolves. He surrendered 12 runs on 15 hits over four and a third innings, striking out three and walking one. Jackson Schoening threw two-thirds of an inning out of the bullpen.

Trevor Nell, Tristan Copet, Schmidt, and Carter Zimmer each collected one hit to lead Algoma Wolves.

Peshtigo tallied 17 hits in the game. Zack Wallin, Heroux, Brandon Eirk, N Lemke, and Jake Gordon each had multiple hits for Peshtigo. 

Missy Srnka didn't feel much like getting out on Monday, tallying four hits and leading Algoma Wolves Varsity to a 11-1 win over Peshtigo.  Srnka singled in the third, singled in the fourth, doubled in the sixth, and singled in the sixth.

Algoma Wolves Varsity fired up the offense in the first inning.  An error scored one run for Algoma Wolves Varsity.

Algoma Wolves Varsity put up five runs in the sixth inning.  Chloie Spitzer, Makayla Guillette, Breanne Schmidt, and Srnka each drove in runs during the inning.

Maddie Prokash earned the win for Algoma Wolves Varsity. She surrendered one run on five hits over six innings, striking out eight and walking one.

G Meyers took the loss for Peshtigo. She surrendered eight runs on seven hits over five innings, striking out four.

Algoma Wolves Varsity tallied 11 hits in the game.  Srnka and Spitzer all managed multiple hits for Algoma Wolves Varsity.  Srnka led Algoma Wolves Varsity with four hits in five at bats.

K Cahill went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Peshtigo in hits.

Five runs batted in from Missy Srnka helped lead Algoma past Sturgeon Bay 16-4 on Saturday.  Srnka drove in runs on a single in the first, a double in the second, a walk in the third, and a single in the fourth.

Algoma earned the victory despite allowing Sturgeon Bay to score four runs in the fourth inning.  Sturgeon Bay scored its runs on a grand slam by Katie Frank.

The Wolves got things moving in the first inning, when Srnka singled on a 3-1 count, scoring one run.

Algoma put up seven runs in the third inning.  The Wolves offense in the inning was led by Hanna Wiese, Srnka, Chloie Spitzer, Emersyn Wallace, and Makayla Guillette, all knocking in runs in the inning.

Maddie Prokash was credited with the victory for Algoma. She went five innings, allowing four runs on three hits, striking out eight and walking one.

Algoma tallied 13 hits in the game.  Srnka, Guillette, Wallace, and Wiese each collected multiple hits for Algoma Wolves Varsity.  Guillette and Srnka each collected three hits to lead the Wolves.  Algoma stole five bases during the game as two players stole more than one. Lindsey Jennerjohn led the way with two.

Algoma softball easily handled Gibraltar on Friday on the road. The final score was 10-0. The Wolves hope to keep that momentum going as they have a very quick turnaround. Algoma will face Sturgeon Bay at 11 AM on Saturday on the road.

Algoma's offense couldn't get anything going in Fish Creek on Friday. Gibraltar beat the Wolves 10-0 in six innings behind a no-hitter from Eric Hoyerman. The Wolves only two baserunners came on a walk and an error. Algoma will try to get back on track on Monday when they host Peshtigo at 5 PM.

Algoma Wolves Varsity got things started in the first inning when.

One bright spot for Sevastopol was a single by S Differt in the first inning.

Prokash took the win for Algoma Wolves Varsity. She surrendered zero runs on four hits over six innings, striking out 14 and walking one.

A Daubner took the loss for Sevastopol. She lasted six innings, allowing 12 hits and ten runs while striking out three.

Algoma Wolves Varsity collected 12 hits on the day.  Spitzer, Missy Srnka, Hanna Wiese, and Wallace all had multiple hits for Algoma Wolves Varsity.  Wallace, Wiese, Srnka, and Spitzer each collected two hits to lead Algoma Wolves Varsity.

Algoma athletes won three events at the Seymour Invitational Thursday, including taking the top three spots in the girls shot put.

On the boys' side, Max Schoening toss of 149 feet gave him the title for discus, while scoring points for the Wolves in shot put as well.

It was all about the girls' shot put throwers, with Bobbi Blahnik, Courtney Guillette, Hannah Wessel taking the top three spots. The Wolves would go on to claim four of the best five throws of the day. Jenny Farley added another title for the Wolves, tying for first in the pole vault at nine feet.

A lot of tough conversations went into the decision, but Algoma Superintendent Nick Cochart is looking forward to the transition its football team will make from 11-man to eight-man competition. The school district made the decision to switch after four consecutive losing seasons and struggling to field a full team. Cochart says at the end of the day, football is football. He believes the program will be better for it.

Wade Vandervest will continue to coach the football program while it trades Southern Door, Sturgeon Bay, and Kewaunee for Gibraltar and Sevastopol as local opponents in the growing eight-man league. The Wolves will likely not be eligible for the playoffs because of its higher enrollment because schools must have a three-year average of 200 students or less to participate in the postseason for eight-man football.

Lexi Wery was credited with the victory for Southern Door. She allowed three hits and zero runs over seven innings, striking out four and walking zero.

Prokash took the loss for the Wolves. She surrendered four runs on ten hits over seven innings, striking out four.

Prokash led Algoma with two hits in two at-bats.

Southern Door tallied ten hits on the day.  Tehya Bertrand, Jackie Atkins, and Kendra Dantoin all managed multiple hits for Southern Door.  Bertrand went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead Southern Door in hits.

The Algoma Wolves watched the game slip away early and couldn't recover in a 15-2 loss to Southern Door on Tuesday. Southern Door scored on a double by Devin Schinkgton in the first inning, a double by Logan Jeanquart in the second inning, a single by Tyler Kroll in the second inning, and a error in the second inning.

Algoma struggled to put runs on the board and had a tough time defensively containing Southern Door, giving up 15 runs.

Southern Door opened up scoring in the first inning. Schinkgton drove in two when he doubled.
Southern Door scored five runs in the seventh inning. Alex Daoust, Kroll, #10, and Schinkgton each had RBIs in the frame.

Derik LeCaptain led things off on the pitcher's mound for Southern Door. He surrendered two runs on four hits over four innings, striking out eight.

Zach Schmidt was on the pitcher's mound for Algoma Wolves  He allowed six hits and eight runs over four innings, striking out two. Mitchell Zimmer threw three innings in relief.
Bryce Duerst, Max Panger, Schmidt, and Trevor Nell each managed one hit to lead Algoma.

Southern Door collected 12 hits on the day. Kroll, Schinkgton, Brodie Overbeck, and Jeanquartall had multiple hits for Southern Door. Kroll led Southern Door with three hits in four at bats.
