Algoma High School Archives for 2020-09

Algoma calls off football season

The Algoma Wolves football team will not be taking the field this fall after all.

Both schools' administrations made the decision to call off the home-and-home series due to rising COVID-19 numbers in both counties. Those were Algoma's only two games on the schedule this year.

This puts Algoma's football conversation as Gibraltar and Sturgeon Bay, two other schools that may see their football seasons begin during the alternative spring season. Those circumstances could change however depending on what kind of hold the pandemic still has on the region.

The football team may still hold an intrasquad scrimmage or two under the Perry Field lights in October.

Wolves Soccer Season Opener

The Algoma boys soccer team will open their season at Peshtigo on Monday. The Wolves finished the 2019 season with a 5-6-1 conference record. That was good for fifth in the Packerland. Meanwhile, Peshtigo finished second with a 6-2-3 conference record.

First touch is at 4:30 p.m.

Algoma Playing Sports this Fall

The Packerland Conference has put in place a new alternate competition metric to give schools the opportunity to participate in sports. This new metric rates a school’s ability to compete and host fans based on the quarantine rate of the athletic program and the population of the high school. According to Nick Cochart, Algoma is planning on participating in volleyball, cross country, and soccer. The football team is practicing as well but has yet to practice in pads. Along with not having any padded practices, the only opponent Algoma has at the moment is Sevastopol. Algoma is looking into what options are available.
