Gibraltar baseball on the rise

The Gibraltar baseball team hopes to combine the playoff success they had last year with the regular season triumph from 2013. Last year the Vikings had lost four straight games heading into the playoffs but pulled off a couple of upsets in the playoffs to win the regional championship. Back in 2013, the Vikings won a Packerland Conference championship.

Their game scheduled for Saturday against Oconto was postponed. The Vikings next scheduled game is for Tuesday when they travel to Green Bay NEW Lutheran.

Saturday's trivia question asked when the last time the Gibraltar baseball team won a conference championship and the answer was 2013.

Gibraltar coach brings camps to Northern Door

Getting aspiring players to high-quality basketball camps during the offseason is a challenge for many in northern Door County, so Gibraltar head boys’ basketball coach Justin Burress did something about it. Enter Max Level Hoops, Burress’ growing endeavor that partners with coaches from the Packerland Conference and the college ranks along with ex-players like former Wisconsin standout Brian Butch. With eight different camps set for this year, Burress says the camps he helps puts on makes getting on the court easier for those who cannot make or afford basketball camps hosted farther away.

The date of Butch’s basketball camps is May 18th while Burress’ Max Level Hoops sessions are June 22nd, July 13th, and August 17th. You can find more information about these camps online with this story.

Spring season juggling on the horizon

The life of an athletic director is about to get more complicated this week as more spring sports seasons are set to begin their outdoor competition schedule in Door and Kewaunee Counties. Track teams still have some meets left indoors, but girls’ soccer, softball, and baseball all have games this week on fields that are either waterlogged or still have snow on them. Much like last year when two April snowstorms cut the baseball and softball seasons to just a handful of conference games and playoffs, Gibraltar athletic director Peggy Tanck says scheduling games this year should be interesting.

Looking at the week ahead, Algoma and Sturgeon Bay softball teams have had their Thursday games already rescheduled for April dates. Luxemburg-Casco soccer still has their Tuesday night match in Manitowoc scheduled to take place.

Gibraltar with strong track team despite no big throwers

Gibraltar's track teams are off to a strong start on the season even though neither the boys or girls teams have a shot put or discus thrower. Abbigael Sitte has been the star for the girls in the 55-meter dash and the high jump. Brady Ash and Victor Jauregui have delivered top-10 finishes for the boys so far this year.

Back in 2015 the Vikings had the strongest discus and shot put thrower in school history as Chris Anderson was putting on a show. He broke school records for longest shot put and longest discus throws. His longest discus throw went 152' 10" while the longest shot put was 51' 10".

Chris Anderson was the correct answer to Saturday's trivia question which asked who broke the Gibraltar school records for longest discus and shot put throws in 2015.

Congratulations to Mary Witteborg for answering the question correctly!

Abbigael Sitte puts up strong performance

The Gibraltar girls track & field team participated in the Pam Kjono Indoor Meet at Lincoln High School on Friday and Abbigael Sitte put up a big performance. Sitte finished the 55 meter dash in 7.88 seconds which was good for a third place finish. She also finished ninth in the high jump.

Abbey Fitzgerald put up the other top 10 finish for the Vikings at the meet as she finished 10th in the long jump.

Gibraltar track boasts youth

It is a young team, but that is alright for Gibraltar track coaches Joy Manweiler Bastian and Clayton Buske. Middle distance runner Evan Henry, sprinter and jumper Bria Caldecott, and thrower Ryan Kropuenske are the only seniors on the 20-person roster. Bastian says there are plenty of great underclassmen returning to the team.

Buske says the athletes are getting used to some of the nuances with each event, especially the sprinters.

Gibraltar joins Luxemburg-Casco for an invitational at Manitowoc Lutheran Thursday afternoon at 4 p.m.

Gibraltar track transitions into competition

The Gibraltar Track and Field teams hope to get their season off to a good start when they open with an indoor meet at Oconto Falls Monday afternoon.

The Vikings had two athletes score points for them at last year's state track and field meet in LaCrosse with high jumper Bria Caldecott finishing just out of the top 10 at a height of 4"08. Senior runner Evan Henry hopes to end his high school running career on a high note after finishing in 7th place in the 1600 meter run with a time of 4:33. Junior Abbigael Sitte ran a personal record when it counted the most in the 100 meter dash, finishing in 8th place with a time of 12.95.

Sturgeon Bay and Algoma will join the Vikings in Oconto Falls Monday afternoon when the field events begin at 4:30 p.m.

Gibraltar golf hopes to start season on time

The Gibraltar golf team is hoping to start the season on time as their first varsity match comes on April 11. With all the snow melting and the recent rain, the courses in Northeast Wisconsin are not in great shape. The Vikings are looking for their first conference title in golf since 2005.

That was the answer to Saturday's trivia question, "When was the last time the Gibraltar golf team won a conference title?"

Gibraltar's playoff run ends against Green Bay N.E.W. Lutheran on 105.1 The Viking

The Gibraltar boys basketball team’s season is over after a loss in the sectional semifinal to their conference rival Green Bay N.E.W. Lutheran on Thursday night, a game broadcasted on 105.1 The Viking. Gibraltar got off to a slow start and went down by double digits early on. Trevor Reinhardt knocked down three 3 point shots and Brady Ash added a dunk to eventually give the Vikings a lead late in the first half. The Blazers ended the half on a bit of a run and led 31-26 at halftime. That run continued when the teams returned from the locker room as Packerland Conference Player of the Year Samuel Meerstein scored 20 of his game high 30 points in the second half. The final score was 78-50.

Trevor Reinhardt finished with 16 points to lead the way for the Vikings in his final high school basketball game. Evan Henry finished with eight and Andras Szakala had five points in their final games at Gibraltar.

Green Bay N.E.W. Lutheran will advance to the sectional final to take on Columbus Catholic on Saturday night at Wausau West High School.

Gibraltar finishes the season at 13-12 overall and 7-9 in the Packerland Conference. They won their first regional championship since 1975.

Gibraltar faces familiar foe in sectional semi on 105.1 The Viking

After traveling to Wisconsin’s north woods for a pair of regional matchups, the Gibraltar Vikings prepare to face Packerland Conference rival NEW Lutheran at Ashwaubenon High School in the WIAA Division 5 boys’ basketball sectional semifinals Thursday night. Both teams are coming off a trio of regional victories in which they won in convincing fashion. The two teams split their conference matchups this season, with the Vikings winning by two in December and the Blazers capturing a nine-point victory on Valentine’s Day.  The victor of Thursday’s matchup will earn a trip to Wausau Saturday night to face the winner of Columbus Catholic and Almond-Bancroft.

Jon Bregman and Tim Kowols will have the call on 105.1 The Viking beginning at 6:45 with the pregame show followed by the opening tip at 7 p.m. You can find extended coverage of the game at our new website and Facebook page, DoorKewauneeHighSchoolSports.com.

Gibraltar's Reinhardts named to charity game roster

Cousins Trevor and Griffin Reinhardt will get to don their Gibraltar football helmets one more time this summer in the name of charity. The seniors were named to the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association Charity All-Star Game roster earlier this month for the game set to be played on July 20th in Oshkosh. The game raises thousands of dollars every year for Children’s Hospital. Griffin, who will continue his football career at St. Norbert College in the fall, says it is an honor to play in the game.

Both Reinhardts were all-MONLPC selections for eight-man football. Trevor was first-team offense and the co-offensive player of the year while Griffin made the first-team for his work on the offensive and defensive lines. They will also get to play with Jeremy Jorns and Nathan Stenzel from conference and county rival Sevastopol on the South All-Star team. You can learn how you donate to their cause online with this story and listen to the full interview with Griffin Reinhardt online at DoorKewauneeHighSchoolSports.com.

Delays expected for spring season

The first game of Gibraltar’s baseball season is supposed to be on March 30th against Oconto, but athletic director Peggy Tanck stated the obvious Friday night when she said it was unlikely the game will be able to take place. For a second straight year, heavy snowfall will make the area fields unplayable for several weeks. Tanck says a lot would need to happen for the competition schedule to start on time.

Even though there are still a couple weeks left to the basketball season, spring sports are on the verge of starting up. Track has already started its workouts, while softball begins March 11th and baseball follows a week after that.

Vikings land Eight on All-Conference list

Gibraltar dominates the regional championship on 105.1 The Viking

Gibraltar went up to northern Wisconsin again on Saturday night and came away with a regional championship on 105.1 The Viking. The number five seed Vikings went to one seed Phelps and shut down their prolific offense. The final score was 63-32 as Gibraltar has now won their three playoff games by 40, 29, and 31 points.

The first few minutes of the game were sloppily played by both teams and neither one had a point in that time. Gibraltar built up a 30-16 lead at halftime and just kept extending that lead throughout the second half. Trevor Reinhardt hit three first half three pointers and ended up leading the team with 13 points. A big key for the Vikings was their two big men, Evan Henry and Brady Ash controlling the inside on defense. Phelps’ top four scorers Gage Robbins, Andrew Gill, Tony Gutierrez and Carl Gutierrez were all very aggressive trying to drive into the paint but would often find the two 6’6” players in the way of the basket.

Gibraltar has won their first regional championship since 1975. The Vikings now advance on to the sectional where they will face off with their Packerland Conference rival Green Bay N.E.W. Lutheran. That game will be played on Thursday night in Ashwaubenon. It will be broadcasted on 105.1 The Viking with the pregame starting at 6:45 PM and the tip-off at 7.

Gibraltar wins big in Florence on 105.1 The Viking, faces Phelps Saturday

Most would expect a four seed playing a five seed to be a close game, but that was not the case when Gibraltar matched up with Florence on Friday night on 105.1 WSBW. The fifth-seeded Vikings blew out the fourth-seeded Bobcats 70-41 to advance to the WIAA Regional Final. Gibraltar took an 11-point lead into halftime and really played well to extend the deficit in the second half. The Vikings clamped down on defense holding Florence’s top two leading scorers well below their season average. Kaden Schuls and Evan Beaster combine to score over 37 points per game on average and were held to eight points apiece on Friday night.

Gibraltar was led by their senior guard and captain Trevor Reinhardt who scored 17 points. Sophomore guard Luke Steebs gave the team a huge boost with 13 points off the bench.

The Vikings will travel to Phelps on Saturday night, a game that will also be broadcast on 105.1 The Viking. The pregame will start at 6:45 PM and tip-off at 7. The Knights are the number one seed in the region and they knocked off Gillett 63-41 in the regional semifinal.

Gibraltar goes the distance for regionals on 105.1 The Viking

The Gibraltar boys’ basketball team has a lot of traveling in store for them this weekend’s WIAA Division 5 regionals. They open up play Friday night against Florence beginning at 7 p.m. It comes after a dominating 81-41 victory on Tuesday against Lena that saw all 15 players get action and 12 get into the scorebook. Evan Henry and Andras Szakala led the team in scoring with 14 points apiece. The Bobcats earned their spot in the regional semifinal with a 78-54 victory over Goodman/Pembine. The goal on defense for the Vikings is to slow down Kaden Schuls’ scoring (20.4 points/game) and Evan Beaster’s dominance on the glass (16.1 rebounds/game).

The team will stay in Iron Mountain, Michigan regardless of the result, but a win will let them wait to see if they travel an hour northwest to face Phelps or drive home to host Gillett on Saturday. Tim Kowols and Jon Bregman will have the call beginning at 6:45 p.m. with the pregame show and the opening tip at 7 p.m. on 105.1 The Viking.
