Kewaunee High School Archives for 2022-11

Algoma Girls Squeak by Kewaunee

The Kewaunee Storm traveled to Algoma in an early season Packerland conference matchup. Algoma emerged victorious 46-39.

Ryley Zimmerman led the Wolves with 12 points and Summer Walechka paced the Storm with nine points.

The Kewaunee Girls have had a rough start to the season, starting 0-3. The young team hopes to improve as they have had to face many challenges.

One of the Storm's challenges has been injuries. Sophomore guard Lexie Hanrahan returned from her ankle injury and scored six points. She did provide the Storm with great shooting and playmaking. She hopefully will lead this team to victories later on in the season.

The Storm face off against Gibraltar this Friday in Kewaunee

Brillion Lions Outgun Kewaunee Storm

The Kewaunee Storm traveled to Brillion and met a very talented Lion team. The Lions emerged victorious in a 65-39 final score. The Lions did not show any signs of weakness, scoring was not difficult. The Storm were not able to establish any sort of offense as turnovers were a major problem. It didn’t help that the three-point attempts were not falling. Brillion’s guards were able to dribble through the attempted full-court pressure. The failed pressure and the turnovers led to many fast break points. One of which ended in a very powerful Jeremey Lorenz two-hand slam.

With all the talent on the Lion’s roster Lorenz wasn’t needed for most of the contest. Grady Geiger led Brillion in points with 18. Geiger was efficient on offense and defense. He and Lorenz combined for 32 of their 65 points. These two along with star guard Caeden Holly could be deadly come playoffs.

The Storm were led by senior guard Payton Kohnle. He led the team in scoring with 14 points and attempted to penetrate the Lion interior defense. Stangel, Cullen, and Ihlenfeldt all had 6.

The Storm battle Algoma Thursday in Kewaunee at 7.

Brillion Hosts Kewaunee Boys in Early Season Contest

Jeremy Lorenz and the Brillion Lions will host the Kewaunee Storm in an early-season contest. The Storm is coming off a 67-51 win against Luxemburg-Casco. Thomas Stangel was a crucial player in the matchup with 21 points. Brillion’s season will start against Kewaunee. This will be a matchup of last season’s sectional semi-final matchup. Brillion emerged victorious and advanced to the state semi-final. The Lions only lost one senior who only played in eight games. This Brillion team has played a lot of basketball together and will be hard to deal with.

The star of this team is Jeremy Lorenz. The Wofford commit averaged 19.8 points as a junior and 11.5 rebounds last season. Caeden Holly averaged 10.6 points per game last year. And finally, Grady Geiger. He averaged 10.9 points and 5.2 rebounds last season. If any defense focuses on shutting down Lorenz, the rest of the team can beat you.

The Storm was able to have a constant offense against Luxemburg-Casco and had scoring from all starters. Ihlenfeldt scored easily in the matchup, and Kohnle and Stangel were also able to score from the backcourt. The Storm will need an offense like this to match up with the high-powered Brillion Lions.

Tipoff is set for 7:30 at Brillion High School.

Kewaunee Girls Looks for First Win at Algoma

The Kewaunee Girls will open their Packerland Conference season at Algoma. The Storm looks to quickly move off their two major losses to Wrightstown and Freedom to start the season. Algoma went 11-14 last year, good enough for 5th place in the Packerland Conference. They lost 3 seniors and will be in a similar scenario this season. Both teams will have younger teams and must focus on developing the young players.

Kewaunee will gladly welcome Lexie Hanrahan back to the court after an ankle injury that kept her out of the first two games. She is the 1 player on this roster that had significant minutes last season and will lead this team in the matchup. Jade Kroll is still out with a broken wrist. Gabby Stangel will most likely distribute the ball for the Storm and be another option for scoring. Brianna Demmin will also need to control the paint for Kewaunee by getting rebounds and scoring.

Tipoff is set for 7:30 at Algoma High School.

Kewaunee Wins with Fashion at Luxemburg-Casco

Kewaunee opened their season with a win tonight as they played their cross-county rival, Luxemburg-Casco. The Storm emerged victorious 67-51. Junior guard Thomas Stangel led Kewaunee. Stangel had 21 points and was able to lead this team's offense. Other key offensive players were Cal Ihlenfeldt who had 18 points and Sawyer Pribek who had 12.

The Storm did not show that they lost most of their key players from last season. The team will be impacted by many members of last season's undefeated JV team. Junior Christopher Cullen went 2 for 2 from three in the contest and gave head coach Luke Neitzel high-quality minutes. Another young addition to the team is sophomore forward Jackson Wisnicky. Wisnicky provided high-quality defense under the team's full-court pressure and had 3 points of his own.

Luxemburg-Casco was led by junior forward Lance Cherovsky. Cherovsky led the team in points with 12. Luxemburg struggled to get through Kewaunee’s full-court pressure and struggled with turnovers. These turnovers led to many fast break layups for the Storm. Caleb Blohowiak also had 4 points.

Kewaunee visits Jeremy Lorenz and the Brillion Lions on Tuesday, November 29.

Luxemburg-Casco to Host Kewaunee in Boys Basketball Season Opener

After a loss to the Brillion Lions in the Sectional Semi-Final last season, the Storm hope to have similar success this season. The team lost leading scorers Ben Heim and Cameron Cullen who were key players to this team. Head coach Luke Neitzel will once again hope to lead this team to another Packerland Conference Championship.

Returning players for the Storm include Cal Ihlenfeldt, Sawyer Pribek, Payton Kohnle, and Thomas Stangel. Ihlenfeldt will be the primary big man with the most height on this team. Pribek is more of a power-forward type of player. Last year teams liked forcing Pribek to bring the ball up the court for the Storm to keep it out of Anthony Jerabek’s hands. Payton Kohnle is a guard for this team. He will be a great 3-point shooter for this team. And Thomas Stangel, his playstyle last year was very drive-heavy. It would not be surprising if Stangel were this team's number 1 scorer.

Kewaunee will be at Luxemburg-Casco tonight at 7:30pm.

Irish pound Storm

The Kewaunee Storm could slow down the Freedom Irish offense on Friday night, losing to their NEC opponent 70-11 at home Friday night.

The Irish outscored the Storm 42-8 in the first half and only allowed three points after the break in the rout. Twelve different Irish players scored including two in double figures. Summer Walechka led the way with three points while two others scored two points. Seven of their 11 points came from the free-throw line.

Freedom Travels to Kewaunee for Early Season Contest

After losing to Wrightstown on Tuesday, the Kewaunee Storm will face the Freedom Irish. Freedom ended Wrightstown’s season last year in a neutral site game. The Irish beat the Tigers 56-31. Freedom went on to lose to Waupun at State, 63-42. Kewaunee faces Freedom Friday, November 18, at approximately 7:30 pm.

The Storm will not be at full strength in this early season contest with injuries to key players. One of which is the sophomore guard, Lexie Hanrahan. She is the only returning player that had substantial minutes on the team last year. She is expected to return from her ankle injury within the next two weeks. Another key player to this young Kewaunee team is Jade Kroll. The freshman forward is very versatile. She had a wrist injury and is out for at least another three weeks.

A player for the Storm that needs to perform is Hannah Morton. The junior guard has struggled to get open and score. When Morton is hitting from three, everyone in the gym knows. She and other key players like Gabby Stangel and Brianna Demmin must find ways to score against a team like Freedom.

Freedom did go to state last season but lost most key players. The Storm will need an incredible effort to put a win in the win column this Friday Night.

Storm look to continue success on hardwood

The Kewaunee Storm are coming off of another successful season last year, winning a share of the Packerland Conference title, sharing it with the Peshtigo Bulldogs.

The Storm went 13-3 in conference play, good enough for that share of the title. Overall, Kewaunee was 18-9, and their season ended in the Sectional Semifinals, as they lost to the Brillion Lions, who made an appearance in the State Tournament. Kewaunee lost their leading scorers, as Ben Heim and Cameron Cullen were seniors last season.

However, Kewaunee will still have a capable offense as key contributors to the team last season will remain on the team this season. Sawyer Pribek and Cal Ihlenfeldt will be big time playmakers and scorers for Kewaunee this season, and Payton Kohnle will most likely find himself running the offense.

The Storm will not get much time to prepare for the basketball season, as the deep run into the season that they made ultimately fell short in a loss to the Aquinas Blugolds.

The first game for the team will be against the Luxemburg-Casco Spartans on the road on November 22nd, and the first Packerland matchup will be December 1st against the Algoma Wolves.

Wrightstown Girls Basketball too Strong for Kewaunee in Season Opener

To kick off the Girls Basketball season the Wrightstown Tigers traveled to face the Kewaunee Storm. The Tigers emerged victorious with a score of 49-26. With the Storm losing all starters and having injuries to key players, head coach Lynn Geier was forced to have a very young group on the court. The Tigers were led by senior guard Danielle Bruecker who led the Tigers in scoring with 14. Bruecker was one of two returning starters from the team last year. Jordan Vickman, the other returning starter for the Tigers, made her presence known with key defensive plays. She also had four points. Wrightstown was able to dribble through Kewaunee’s attempt at full court pressure, resulting in a lot of fastbreak points.

The Storm were not at full strength in this early season contest with injuries to key players. One of which being Lexie Hanrahan. The sophomore guard suffered an ankle injury in practice this week. She is the only returning player that had substantial minutes on the team last year. She is expected to return in the next 2 weeks. Another key player to this young Kewaunee team is Jade Kroll. The freshman forward is very versatile. She had a wrist injury and is out for at least another three weeks.

The Tigers were able to get 18 of their 49 from the three point shot. They were also able to get inside looks really showing that they can score in multiple ways.

Kewaunee’s young team was led by freshman guard Gabby Stangel. She had 8 points for the Storm. The Storm often struggled to get the ball inside with possessions often resulting in turnovers. Brianna Demmin had 8 points and was limited by the height of the Wrightstown team.

Kewaunee faces Freedom on November 18th at Kewaunee High School.

Kewaunee welcomes Wrightstown in Girls Basketball opener

The Kewaunee Storm girls basketball team will get their season underway Tuesday night, as they play host to the Tigers of Wrightstown.

Kewaunee was the runner ups in the Packerland last season, with an overall record of 17-9 and a conference record of 13-3. The Storm will have to find the production to replace their top six leading scorers of the past season; with Taylor Schleis, Toni Bortilini, Mykenzi Uhlers, Sabrina Ferron, and Kiley Gaedtke all receiving some sort of All-Packerland Conference recognition last year. They will hope that production comes quickly against Wrightstown.

Wrightstown will be a good test for the Storm, as they finished last season at 20-6 overall and lost in the regional finals to the Freedom Irish. However, the Tigers leading scorers from last season all have graduated, as their highest returning scorer averaged 7.6 points per game last season. Two teams that have seen some big turnover will face off in their first game of the season.

The tip is set for 7:30 P.M.

Blugolds silence Storm on U-1021

The Aquinas Blugolds simply could not be stopped in the second half as they turned a close game at halftime against the Kewaunee Storm into a 44-19 rout in Wisconsin Rapids on Friday.

The Storm struck first with a clock-eating drive that took more than five minutes off  the clock and put six on the scoreboard after Mitchell Thompson scored on a quarterback sneak.

The Blugolds would make their mark in the second quarter with two quick touchdowns on a nine-yard rush by Calvin Hargrove and a long passing play from Jackson Flottmeyer to Collin Conzemius to make it 14-6. The Blugolds left enough time on the clock for Thompson to find Maddix Mueller on a quick pattern to the front pylon to make it 14-12 at the break.

It was all Blugolds after half time as they scored on every drive in the third quarter and outscored the Storm 30-7 in the last two frames. Hargrove scored two of the four rushing touchdowns in the half. The Storm would make it a two-score game in the fourth quarter after Owen Carlson found the  endzone in his return to the lineup.

The Bluegolds would answer that score and then some after forcing a safety and following it up with their fourth touchdown of the half to secure their second straight title game appearance.

The Storm finished the season 11-2.

Storm look to repeat last seasons Girls Basketball success

The Kewaunee Storm Girls Basketball team had a strong showing last season, finishing as Packerland Conference runner-ups behind Oconto. The Storm will see almost a completely new team hit the court this season however, losing seven graduating seniors.

Kewaunee finished last season with a record of 17-9 overall, and 13-3 in conference play. The Storm were eliminated in the second round of last year's WIAA Girls Basketball Tournament to Oostburg.

Kewaunee will look to get big strides of improvement from underclassmen, with Lexi Hanrahan being the highest scoring underclassmen last season, as she averaged 3.4 Points Per Game.

The Storm will return to action this season as they host the Wrightstown Tigers on Tuesday November 15th, and begin Packerland play against their neighbors the Algoma Wolves on November 29th.

Kewaunee looks to return to state on U-1021

For the first time this playoff run, the Kewaunee Storm will face an unfamiliar 2022 opponent when they line up across from Aquinas in Wisconsin Rapids Friday night.

The Storm beat Sturgeon Bay (71-6), Kiel (27-13), and Southern Door (15-12) in consecutive games after going a combined 2-1 against them during the regular season. The semi-final clincher in Brussels was very much in doubt late in their game against the Eagles, but then DJ Echos took a handoff on a weird exchange 72 yards untouched to seal the game for the Storm. Mitchell Thompson has thrown for 1498 yards and 17 touchdowns this year to go along with his 11 rushing touchdowns. The team's leading rusher, Owen Carlson, will still be inactive due to a lower-body injury suffered in the Kiel game.

The Blugolds defeated Durand-Arkansaw (51-6), Northwestern (38-13), and former Division 6 state champion Colby (28-14) en route to their second straight semifinal. They beat Mayville 28-26 to win the Division 5 championship last season. Ranked #1 in the state despite their #3 seed in the tournament field, the Blugolds are led by Jackson Flottmeyer. The All-State quarterback has thrown for over 2200 yards and 26 touchdowns while using his feet for seven more.

The two teams do have a history. Kewaunee head coach Randy Charles rushed for 53 yards, made eight tackles, and intercepted one pass in a 27-0 Blugolds victory in the 2007 Division 5 State Title game.

Tim Kowols and Henry Annen will have the call from Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln High School on U-1021 and NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com beginning at 6:45 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the kickoff at 7 p.m.

Kewaunee's Charles draws parallels to football's past success

Kewaunee head football coach Randy Charles knows a little something about what winning teams look like.

Charles played on the Storm's teams that made it to the state final in 2006 and 2007. Both teams took losses at Camp Randall Stadium, but finished those seasons a combined 26-2. He says the secret to those teams were not necessarily the stars, but the role players that stepped up to play every game.

The Kewaunee Storm will battle the Aquinas Bluegolds on Friday night at 7 p.m. in Wisconsin Rapids. Tickets are available online now and at the door, but if you cannot make it to Wisconsin Rapids, Tim Kowols and Henry Annen will have the call on U-1021 and NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com beginning at 6:45 p.m. with the pregame show followed by kickoff.

You can listen to the full interview with Randy Charles at this link.

Storm learn state semi-final site

The Kewaunee Storm football team now knows where they are heading for Friday's state semifinal.

The Storm will meet defending Division 5 champion La Crosse Aquinas at Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln High School at 7 p.m.

The Storm nipped Southern Door 15-12 and Aquinas topped Colby 28-14 on Friday night to set up the matchup.

If you cannot make it to Wisconsin Rapids, U-1021 will carry the game live beginning at 6:45 p.m. followed by kickoff at 7 p.m.

Storm upset Eagles on rainy night on U102.1

The Kewaunee Storm pulled off the upset of all upsets Friday night in Southern Door, as the Storm beat the Eagles 15-12 to win a regional final.

Kewaunee opened the game with a flea flicker, as Jesse Morales-Hernandez flipped it to Mitchell Thompson who found Peyton Kohnle for a 60 yard gain. Thompson would then drive the pile for a one yard touchdown.

Drew Daoust and the Southern Door Eagles would answer back quickly as Daoust lead the offense down the field with big runs from Zack Lynch. Daoust would roll to his right and run into the endzone, but fail the two point conversion to make it a 7-6 Kewaunee lead.

Mitchell Thompson would make a mistake and fire a pick to safety Jack Peterson who would return the interception down to the five yard line. Zack Lynch would then punch it in from 5 yards out the very next play, but another failed 2 point conversion would make it 12-7.

That score would hold until some drama before the half, as the Storm would be denied the ability to run a play as the clock was not started right away, which would end the half with the score remaining at 12-7 even with Thompson getting into the endzone if the play would have counted.

The score would not change until six minutes left in the fourth quarter, as DJ Echos would take a handoff on a weird exchange 72 yards untouched to seal the game for the Storm.

Kewaunee will move on to face the reigning Division 5 state champions Aquinas, as the Southern Door Eagles will prepare for their winter sports seasons.

Storm travel to Eagles with regional title in sights

The Kewaunee Storm and Southern Door Eagles will get ready to tango for a second time this season, as this time it will be for a regional title and to be one game away from the state tournament in Madison.

The Storm has gone through two familiar opponents to get to this point, as they defeated conference opponent Sturgeon Bay 71-6 in the first round and then the Kiel Raiders 27-13, who they had defeated in week one. Now another familiar foe, the team that gave Kewaunee their only loss on the season, Southern Door. The Eagles snuck a win against the Storm 19-14 back on October 7th in Brussels. Kewaunee has been a better defensive team since that game, so the Storm will go in looking to get their revenge and punch their ticket to Sectionals for the first time since 2013, where they lost to state runner-up Lancaster.

Southern Door has seen some unfamiliar opponents this season: they took down the Brillion Lions 49-0 and the Chilton Tigers 34-7 on their way to the matchup against the Storm. The Eagles have not been to the sectional semifinal round since their 1989 state championship season, so they will be looking to remake history this Friday. Zack Lynch has burst onto the scene this season, as he has run for 1,357 yards and 21 touchdowns on the year. Lynch was able to run for 122 yards against the Storm and will look to run over the Storm once again in this matchup.

Gary Barta and Henry Annen will have coverage from Southern Door Friday night on U102.1 and NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com. Pregame will begin at 6:45, with kickoff set for 7:00.
