Ploor honored with postseason award

Mya Ploor's great all-around game for Sevastopol volleyball this season earned her a spot on the All-Packerland Conference First Team. She helped lead the Pioneers to a first round upset in the Division 3 playoffs over Manitowoc Lutheran. Mya's volleyball career is now over as she will graduate in the spring. Junior Rebekah Andreae was named as an Honorable Mention.

Stenzel advances to state

Olivia Stenzel showed she is one of the best long-distance runners in the state on Saturday in the Division 3 Cross Country Sectionals at Manitowoc Lutheran. She finished in third place with a time of 19:56.1 only behind Brooklyn Luebke from Manitowoc Lutheran and Ellen Moore at Lourdes Academy. Stenzel led the girls team to a score of 251.

On the boys side, Jake Pfleiger placed in 54th place with a time of 19.05.9. The boys finished with a team score of 307.

Sevastopol volleyball season ends

Oostburg proved to be too much for the Sevastopol Pioneers volleyball team as they dropped their regional semi-final match in three straight sets.

Sevastopol lost to Oostburg 14-25, 9-25, 10-25. Three Pioneers players shined in their final match of the season with Mya Ploor and Johanna Andreae scored eight and six kills respectively while Sasha Laaksonen collected 21 assists.

Sevastopol volleyball rallies for upset

Sevastopol High School's volleyball team found itself down two sets to nothing on the road against seven seed Manitowoc Lutheran Tuesday night. The Pioneers lost the first set, 20-25, and then got thumped, 8-25, in set two. The team regrouped and ran off three consecutive hard-fought sets, 25-22, 25-23, 16-14, to pull the upset.

Mya Ploor was a catalyst in both facets of the game collecting 17 kills and 12 digs. Johanna Andreae had 8 kills as well. Sasha Laaksonen delivered 32 assists. Sevastopol returns to the court on Thursday night at #2 Oostburg. The Lady Dutch hail from the Big East Conference. They won in straight sets over Winnebago Lutheran, 25-13, 25-12, 25-16.

Young Sevastopol team looking towards 2020

Only one senior suited up for the Sevastopol football team in their final game against Wabeno/Laona on Friday. The Pioneers lost that game 54-14 which was broadcasted on 104.1 WRLU and DoorKewauneeHighSchoolSports.com. Arthur Hocevar was the lone senior on the field as the other two, Caden Kacmarynski and Triston Beauchamp, were both hurt. With the lack of experience, Sevastopol was not able to repeat the success of 2018 when they won a state championship. Head Coach Ron Frank talks about what those three seniors have meant to the Pioneer football program.

Sevastopol started a number of sophomores the whole season and improved throughout the season. The Pioneers lost their first four games before a three-game winning streak in the middle of the season. They lost their final two contests against co-conference champion Gibraltar and another really good team in Wabeno/Laona. Coach Frank has already talked with his assistants about their plans for next season which should be an improvement on the 2019 campaign.

Sevastopol drops homecoming game on 104.1 WRLU

The Sevastopol football team played hard in front of a big homecoming crowd on Friday night against Wabeno-Laona but couldn't come up with a victory in the final game of the season. The Rebels knocked off Sevastopol 54-14 ending the Pioneers state title defense. Sevastopol's defense had a hard time stopping the dynamic running duo of Ethan Westimayer and Connor Taylor for Wabeno/Laona. They both scored four touchdowns with two of Taylor's coming on kickoff returns.

The Pioneers had a couple of big plays of their own on offense. Logan Beyer caught a 67 yard touchdown pass from Jack DeYoung who was in the game replacing the injured Triston Beauchamp. Spencer Evenson had a 35 yard touchdown run in the second half. He finished with 25 carries for 142 yards and reached the 1,000 yard mark on the season.

Sevastopol emptied the playbook for the final game of the season and they all ended in interceptions. A flea flicker in the first half was picked off. Both of Spencer Evenson's passes were intercepted in the game including a jump pass attempt down near the goal line.

Sevastopol only lined up with three seniors on the squad this season and they were all honored at halftime along with other accomplished Sevastopol senior athletes. Only one of those three suited up in the final game and that was Arthur Hocevar. Triston Beauchamp and Caden Kacmarynski were both out with injuries.

Sevastopol Head Coach Ron Frank said in the postgame show on 104.1 WRLU that he expected his team to have growing pains this season after losing so much off of last year's state championship team. But with the Pioneers only losing three players off the team, the 2020 campaign could be a strong one.

Sevastopol plays homecoming game on 104.1 WRLU

Sevastopol football's last game this season is homecoming and you can listen to it on 104.1 WRLU. The Pioneers will be taking on Wabeno/Laona. Sevastopol is coming off a 36-14 loss to Gibraltar last week in a game that was closer than the final score indicates. It was a one-score game with six minutes left to play before the Vikings pulled away at the end. That loss ended Sevastopol's three-game winning streak.

Wabeno/Laona is coming off a 38-6 non-conference victory over Three Lakes last week. They are led by their senior running back and defensive back Ethan Westimayer. He's rushed for over 800 yards this season and picked off two passes as well.

Spencer Evenson has a chance to rush for over 1,000 yards on the season if he gains 123 yards on the ground.

Jonathan Bregman and Tim Ash will be on the call on 104.1 WRLU and DoorKewauneeHighSchoolSports.com. The pregame show will begin at 6:30 PM and kickoff at 7.

Sevastopol winning streak ends on 104.1 WRLU

The Sevastopol Pioneers football team had a couple of three-game winning streaks that came to an end on Friday night at Gibraltar in a game broadcasted on 104.1 WRLU and 105.1 The Viking. Sevastopol was coming into the contest winning three in a row after starting the season off 0-4. The Pioneers also had taken three in a row from their rival Gibraltar. On a cold, wet, windy night Gibraltar prevailed 36-14.

Sevastopol was able to force three Gibraltar turnovers after forcing five last week. But the Vikings were able to get enough offense from their running attack with Alex Laughlin and Luke Steebs each running for over 150 yards.

After a scoreless first quarter, Gibraltar got two touchdown runs in the second quarter from the quarterback Steebs. Sevastopol finally got on the board in the third quarter after the Pioneers recovered a fumble deep in Gibraltar territory. Spencer Evenson ran in a touchdown from five yards out. Alex Laughlin got a touchdown run for Gibraltar to extend the lead to 22-8. Triston Beauchamp brought Sevastopol back within one score with a touchdown run of this own. Gibraltar was able to seal the game with two late touchdowns to pull out a victory that probably wasn't as lopsided as the final score might indicate.

Sevastopol is now 3-5 overall on the season and 3-4 in the MONLPC. The Pioneers have a chance to get back to .500 in the conference with a home win next week against Wabeno/Laona. That game will be on 104.1 WRLU and DoorKewauneeHighSchoolSports.com. The pregame show will begin at 6:30 PM and kickoff at 7.

Sevastopol falls to 0-6 in the Packerland Conference but the Pioneers have had a lot of success in non-conference play including a win at the Algoma Invitational earlier this year.

Forcing turnovers key to Pioneer victory

The defense forcing turnovers was the key to the Sevastopol High School football team's victory over Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas on 104.1 WRLU. It was a chilly night at Sevastopol High School and the Pioneers picked up a 42-14 victory. Caden Kacmarynski recovered a fumble in the first quarter and ran it in for a touchdown for the first turnover and score of the game. Tommy Giblin intercepted a pass and recovered a fumble in the first half. Alex Valdivia also intercepted a pass in the second quarter. Cesar Sandoval sealed the game in the fourth quarter with an interception for the fifth and final turnover.

Triston Beauchamp threw for two touchdowns to Spencer Evenson and also ran for one. Evenson would later run in a touchdown as well. Jack DeYoung came in at the end of the fourth quarter and threw a touchdown to Logan Beyer.

It was the third victory in a row for the Pioneers after starting the season off 0-4. Sevastopol will try to make it four in a row next week when they travel north to Gibraltar. You can hear the Sevastopol broadcast on 104.1 WRLU and the Gibraltar call on 105.1 The Viking. Both games will be streamed on DoorKewauneeHighSchoolSports.com with the pregame shows starting at 6:30 PM and the kickoff at 7.

Southern Door got the best of Oconto earlier in the week in five sets. That has been rare this season. Oconto has won over 80 percent of their matches overall and are fighting for first in the Packerland Conference.
