Culver's Student-Athlete of the Week: Sevastopol's Cole Dvorak

Born out of the pandemic came opportunities for Sevastopol senior Cole Dvorak.

When the soccer season was pushed to the alternative spring season due to its relationship with Gibraltar, Dvorak chose to give football a try for the first time since middle school. Two games and several cancellations into the season, the football season was also pushed to the alternative spring season. Dvorak says he got approval to do both sports when things pick up in about a month.

Dvorak also joined the math team on a more full-time basis during his senior year. It is fitting as Dvorak prepares to head to UW-Platteville this fall and enter an engineering program.

In the immediate future, Dvorak's attention is on the basketball season. The Pioneers end the season with regular-season match-ups against Sturgeon Bay and Peshtigo before opening the playoffs against Mishicot on Tuesday.  Dvorak currently leads the team in scoring with just over 12 points a game.

Pioneer boys host Clippers

The Sevastopol Pioneers will have two more chances to break a season-long drought against Packerland teams beginning Thursday night against Sturgeon Bay.

The Pioneers were outscored 50-19 in the second half of its 100-59 loss to Southern Door earlier this week. Manav Jandu posted one of his better scoring nights of the season with 13 points.

The Clippers would even out their own Packerland slate with a win after losing to Kewaunee on Tuesday 63-51.

Sevastopol girls advance to regional semifinal on 105.1 The GOAT

The Sevastopol Pioneers used a big run midway through the first half to put some distance between them and the Gibraltar Vikings en route to a 54-31 win in Institute Tuesday night.

The Pioneers and the Vikings traded baskets earlier with each team taking the lead twice. Up 11-8, the Pioneers closed out the first half on a 21-7 run the Vikings would be unable to close. The game was closer in the second half, but the Vikings could not get the shots to fall as they saw their season end. Zoe Kuehn overcame a slow start to lead the Pioneers with 15 points while Bailey Rikkola (12 points) and Libby Ash (11 points) also scored in double figures.

Sage Krause led the Vikings with 10 points while Karlee Kita added nine in the loss.

The Pioneers will now head to Mishicot for Friday night game against the top-seeded Mishicot Indians.

Sevastopol girls host Gibraltar on 105.1 The GOAT

A trip to top-ranked Mishicot is on the line when the Gibraltar Vikings travel to face the Sevastopol Pioneers.

The Pioneers have lost five of their last six game, but have done so by a combined total of only 14 points. That includes their last game against Southern Door to the tune of 43-39. Even with the skid, the Pioneers have improved more than five games off of last year's win total. Culver's Door County Student-Athlete of the Week leads the team with almost a double-double a game with 17.3 points and 9.9 rebounds a game.

The Vikings have run through a gauntlet as they have face four of the conference's top five teams since breaking out of quarantine last week, going 0-3 in that span thus far.  Karlee Kita scored 13 and Maggie Moroney added 11 in the team's 73-40 loss against Kewaunee. The Vikings have been able to spread the wealth this season with three different players averaging close to double figures in Kita, Moroney, and guard Sage Krause.

Tim Kowols and Bryan Mazur will have the call on 105.1 The GOAT beginning at 6:30 p.m. with the pregame followed by the opening tip at 7 p.m.

Sturgeon Bay native holds nation's fastest swim time

If you blink, you might just miss Sturgeon Bay's Max McHugh's next race.

The Sevastopol product and current Minnesota swimmer posted a 100 yard breaststroke time of 50.55, which is a season-best and currently tops the NCAA. According to SwimSwam, McHugh also won the 200 breaststroke on Saturday with a time of 1:53.17, which puts him ranked fifth in the nation. He also ran fast legs in the 200 medley and freestyle relays.

Swimming World currently ranks McHugh as the ninth-best swimmer in the country and believes he could be Minnesota's first national champion since 1964.

Culver's Student-Athlete of the Week: Sevastopol's Zoe Kuehn

Sacrifice would be one way to describe Zoe Kuehn's senior year at Sevastopol.

The Culver's Door County Student-Athlete of the Week saw her volleyball season get pushed to the alternative spring season due to COVID-19 protocols causing several game cancellations and postponements. Her love of basketball led her to the decision to remain in virtual learning to protect that season as much as possible. The Pioneers still had one COVID-19 situation that forced them to quarantine for two weeks. It was a decision Kuehn says was tough to make, but happy she did.

Kuehn has become the leading scorer and rebounder on a team that had won seven games in Packerland Conference play as of Thursday, which was a five-game improvement over last year. She says there are lots of reasons for the uptick in wins.

Joining the school's 1,000 point club in January, Kuehn will push for more tomorrows in her basketball career when the Pioneers battle the Gibraltar Vikings on Tuesday in Institute. 105.1 The Goat will cover the game beginning at 7:15 p.m.

Stockbridge comes into the contest 13-5 as an independent. Katelin Kramp scored 22 points in the Indians' 46-31 win on Tuesday.

Tip is set for 6 p.m.

The Pioneers are coming off a stretch where they have lost four of their last five, but did so by only a combined 10 points. That includes a 48-45 loss to NEW Lutheran on Saturday. The Eagles avenged a 76-74 loss at Peshtigo earlier last week with a 55-51 overtime victory against the Bulldogs on Friday.
